A garbage disposal is a handy tool in the kitchen. As the name implies, this device helps you dispose of bits of matter in the kitchen that may be considered garbage. Of course, it has its limitations. Only degradable materials should be put into your disposal. Materials other than food may cause you major problems, if not now, then down the road.
There are a number of things that can go wrong with your disposal. Here is a list of symptoms and the possible cause for your garbage disposal:
Your mew disposal doesn’t make any noise when turned on
This may not be a problem at all. Some of the newer disposals are made so well that they make virtually no noise when running empty. If the appliance isn’t working, you may need to hit the reset button. The reset button is usually the red button on the appliance itself. If the problem still persists, check the circuit breakers.
Your disposal doesn’t drain
This happens to disposals as they get older. There are several reasons for this. Firstly, it could be blocked. Try running vinegar and baking soda emulsion down it. There are instructions for this on Youtube. If the motor is blown, you need to replace your disposal. You can try this yourself or call a professional to replace it.
Leaking
If there is leaking from a new disposal, you may want to repeat the installation steps and make sure that it is sealed properly. If the leaking persists, hiring a professional is your best bet.
