Plumbing Tips for the Laundry Room

Laundry rooms use just as much plumbing as other rooms in the house, yet people tend not to think about it that way. You have both hot and cold water inputs and a main drainage line. Often times, when a problem is recurring with the main sewage drain, the problem can be traced back to the laundry room.

People often use way too much laundry detergent. They also use additives that soften clothing or adds fragrances to it. Many of these products, along with your standard detergent, can create a residue in your main outgoing drainage line. The result is that you have to call the plumber to snake the line and get things moving again. 

It’s a good idea to use an all natural laundry soap. See if you can get away with using less than the recommended amount. Personally I used less than half of what they suggest on the package.

Some other great tips for the laundry room are:

-Make sure the dryer screen/filter is clean. If it is not clear of debris it will cause your dryer to work harder and not only cost more money in electricity, but burn your dryer out quicker.

-Make sure you are not overloading the washer/dryer. These machines take a beating when the loads of laundry are large. Just because it fits, doesn’t mean it is an acceptable load amount. Again, the life expectancy of the machine can be diminished drastically if it is constantly overloaded.

-Make sure the portals coming in and out of the washing machine are clear of debris. The water-spout and the holes which allow the water to drain should be totally clear and clean if the machine is to operate properly.

-Make sure the exhaust vent for the dyer is clear and unobstructed. If this is blocked in any way, you wil be using more electricity and the dryer will burn out quicker.
