This question is very common. You smell urine coming from your bathroom. So, you get in there and give it a good cleaning. The next day, the smell emanates from the bathroom again. Frustrating!
So, what is going on in your bathroom that is causing it to smell like pee even though it is squeaky clean. The most common reason for this is that the seal which exists between your toilet and the bathroom floor has a leak.
The seal goes bad over time and urine makes it way onto to the floor. But the gases from the drain also come back through any non-airtight space in the seal. The seal is made from wax so it will degrade over time. There is no way around that.
What to Do
You will have to replace the wax seal, reseat the toilet and then re-caulk it. If you are pretty handy around the home, you can do this yourself. If you are not that handy, then you can hire a plumber and he can knock the job out in less than an hour in most cases.
Prices do vary depending on the plumber. A licensed plumber will get the job done fast and correctly. If the leak has not been happening very long then you don’t have to worry about your subfloor and joists being rotted. if there is rot, then the price for the repair job will obviously increase.
If you are a tenet, then the landlord is usually responsible for this repair. Check your lease agreement. If you are the homeowner, then you will have to shell out the costs for this repair.
