The only reason we are writing an article on this topic is because it happens. More often than you may think. Here is what to do if this ever happens to you.
You and your significant other go out for dinner and a movie. When you come back home there is an inch or two of water covering the entire floor. Ughh.
Step 1: Don’t Panic.
Step 2: Find the source of the problem. Yes this mean walking through your water covered floors. Its a tough job but somebody’s got to do it.
Step 3: After you have identified what is leaking, shut off the house water supply.
Step 4: Clean water off the floor. You can buy a wet-dry vac from Home Depot or Lowe’s for under fifty bucks. It’s worth it.
Step 5: Repair the leak. In some cases it could be as simple as the toilet lever getting stuck in the down position. replace the lever mechanism. Or, your problem could be that a pipe busted. If the leak or problem is beyond your ability to repair call a certified plumber.
Step 6: Make sure to wash anything that was contaminated with the water. If your carpet was soaked, use the wet-dry vac. Or rent a professional carpet cleaning vacuum from Publix. Or if your carpet was old, why not pull it up? It may have been time for a new carpet anyway.
Run some fans on wood flooring that may have been soaked or on the drywall. You don’t want rot to set in.
No matter what, stay calm and you will make it through fine. You can be back to normal in less than a day. Make sure you repair the leak or item that caused the problem because chances are this will happen again.
